Alignment
Remake of my old Alignment Post. Inspired by Felineposting and Jay.
Law and Chaos exist as superconstructs, as crucial to the universe as matter or space. One cannot exist without the other and so are never truly destroyed.
It’s hard to refer to Law and Chaos as “beings” as much as you can refer to the platonic ideal of something as a being, too immense to be described with a definite state of being, only qualities but never the whole can be explained, much like the aforementioned time or space.
Law is stasis and singularity. It is a single fixed point from which has infinite fractal inside, constantly attempting to create formulae and categorizations for all possibilities until everything is subsumed into the One. Its greatest champion is called The Avatar: the single incarnation, the irony being that it is separate from Law and as such can never truly be it. Without Chaos, Law would reduce the universe to infinite plane of salt that would collapse and bend in on itself into one point. Its symbol is the straight arrow, or two pyramids stacked atop eachother.
Chaos is multiplicity and entropy. An indescribable, moving roil of faces and thoughts and outcomes: a body without organs to define its operations. Everything becomes liquid and formless under chaos, all possibilities realizing themselves in infinite forms. Its greatest champions are the Chaos Lords, infinite demons and gods of thousands of face, but just like The Avatar they too can never be Chaos, for they are individuality and single fixed points themselves. Without Law, Chaos would exhaust all possibility, burning and destroying everything until all is reduced to nothing in the heat-death of the universe. Its symbol is 8 radial arrows, or a wheel with eight points.
Those who abstain are Neutral, whether this is from cowardice or worry. They do not partake in the Great Game and as such live outside of it. Most organisms are Neutral.
Conversely there is Balance. Both must be in check, for they cannot exist without each other. Balance and Neutrality are not true forms like Chaos and Law but what fills the void between and outside them.
All men start at Neutral. Acts of deviation and slippage (such as spell mutation or magic items) cause them to snowball into Law or Chaos, capping at 6 degrees for any further would cause subsumption into the alignment, the human body barley even handling 3 points.
You may become but never start as Balanced.
