Childhood Appendix N
Did someone say gauche bandwagon-jumping?
Here’s some shit I loved as a wee little homunculo. This list is gonna be a lot more zoomer inclined than any other posts in this vein.
- Adventure Time: the whole clash of sci-fi, fantasy and it being post apocalyptic stuck to my eagerly developing skull.
- Regular Show: similar as above, particularly with the absurdist comedy angle as well.
- Як Козаки and other animations by Kievanuchfilm: this stuff was my lifeblood as a kid. I’ve always been into the trippy Soviet stuff (cough cough hill cantons) so a lot of the earlier artsy cartoons appeal to me. The later ones… ehhhh…
- DnD Cartoon: funny story actually, I watched this before I figured out that DnD was an RPG, which lead 7-9 year old me to making a board game called “Dungeons and Dragons” for a school project where it had little doilies you could swing around to knock over players. I wish I could find it…
- Howl’s Moving Castle (the movie specifically) and other Ghibli movies. Still have the box set with all the movies up to 201X or some similar date.
- Discworld: I’ve always had a weird relationship with the Disc. I’ve always like, osmosed it but never read it until recently.
- A specific Deadman comic in a larger omnibus where he goes to hell and women would be killed in a cycle but they were evil? I only remember it cuz it’s the first time 5 year old me saw a boob.
- the “Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf” films from like the early 2010s. I remember watching these uploaded to YouTube.
- These 3 omnibuses of fairytales called “101 КАЗКИ»: should have these things around the house somewhere.
- Bionicle but specifically the shitty 2015 one, I wasn’t cool enough for them back in the day.
- Power Rangers: same gonzo/weird reasons as adventure time.
- Pretty Cure’s Adaptation as Glitter Force: one of my first exposures to Anime and weeb shit.
- Avatar (both The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra)
- Zelda Wind Waker: the first real Zelda game I got into, I bought it for the Wii U in a sale bin. I could never get past that one puzzle on the Rito Island where you have to throw bombs to make statues fall over and form a path.
- Skylanders: it just fucks hard dude what else can I say, also it started my love of Sky Islands.
